With two kids sick with the flu, there isn’t a whole of treating mommy going on around here today. All mommy’s treat attention will be turned to the little ones. Here are a few of my favorite mommy treats for my kids when they’re sick.
HBO on Demand and Pay Per View
This works wonders. You never know when you’re kids are going to be sick so it’s not like you can order a few movies from Netflix and them ready and you’re sure not going to be able to shoot off to Blockbuster with everyone needing your attention. The solution? HBO on Demand or any other pay per view movies for the kids. It only costs a couple of bucks and seeing a new movie when you’re sick (not some old movie from your DVD collection) can really help pass the time.
Use the couch and not their bedroom
Never stuff your sick children in the bedroom. How much fun is that? Bring your sick kids out into the living room and make a “sick bed” on the couch. Let them help choose their favorite pillows and sheets. A “sick bed” on the couch is a treat for them and my pediatrician swears up and down that the couch has healing powers.
Journals
I’ve found that kids always feel a little better in the afternoon. I give treat my kids by letting them draw in their journals. Each one of my kids has a grown-up journal of unlined white paper that they use for drawing. Journals are so much better than coloring books because the journal challenges the child’s imagination. A journal is way better than plan sheets of paper because the journal keeps everything together. A journal for child is a mommy treat waiting to happen someday when you pull it off the shelf and look back at the art your child produced… even when they were sick.
Baby books
My children are fascinated by their baby books. They love to look at pictures of themselves when they were babies and they can’t enough of hearing the fun stories about when they were born. Breaking out the baby books when your kids are sick is nice way to take up some time and take their mind off of being sick. A baby book is also a nice break from your collection of books and stories they’ve heard a hundred times before.
And last but not least - keep the sick kids home
Sounds crazy, but I know plenty of people who send their kids off to school when the kids are sick. This may not be much of a mommy treat for the sick kids as it is a mommy treat for the parents without sick kids! Don’t send your kids off to school and get everybody else sick and do us all a favor and don’t send them back to school until they’ve been fever free for more than 24 hours. It’s just that simple.

I totally agree, it’s an art to turn one meal into multiple meals for the picky eater. Great idea!
